*AKG C414 XLS at $1,869 AUD, as published in our FAQ price comparison, July 2026.
Our 414 is $585 AUD. The AKG C414 XLS is $1,869 AUD. That's a 219% premium, which is why our FAQ asks the question this whole page hangs on: "Ask yourself, is the sound outcome 219% better?"
We're not going to tell you the big-brand mic is bad. It's a great microphone. It has also spent forty years becoming a logo, and logos are expensive.
the extra $1,284, the part we call the logo tax
Both bars record audio.
Think about the record that made you want to record. You fell for a voice, a guitar, a drum kit in a room. You didn't fall for a badge on a microphone.
Somewhere along the way, the industry decided that serious sound should cost serious money. Not because the parts cost that much, but because the name on the body does. We call that the logo tax, and we refuse to charge it.
We're NUDE Microphones, a South Australian company with one core promise: low cost, superb sonic quality microphones. Honest, high-quality recording tools for people who care about sound, not status. No showroom, no distributor markup, online only. That keeps our costs low, and we pass the value back into the microphones.
Our tagline is "We Love Listening." We mean it.
You know the loop. It starts with "best condenser under $1,000" at 11pm and ends three hours later with nineteen open tabs, two conflicting forum threads from 2014, and a strong opinion about a mic you have never heard. So you buy nothing. Or you buy something "for now", it disappoints on drums, and the loop starts again.
The real studios never had this problem. They solved it decades ago with one microphone.
If you've watched any studio documentary, you've seen the squared-off body and the sliders. Multi-pattern 414-style condensers became the utility knife of recording: overheads one day, acoustic guitar the next, grand piano, guitar amps, vocals when the fancy tube mic is busy.
The NUDE 414 is our open homage to AKG's golden-era lineage, channelling the legendary EB/BULS era of the brass-ring years through the 1980s. Not a counterfeit, not a mystery mic. An honest recreation of a sound: that classic 80s subtly darker lusciousness, alive and present through the high end.
The front sliders: 10dB/20dB pad, 75Hz/150Hz high-pass. Set them per source.
"They're a big warm sound... If anyone asks, I'll say they just sound 'full of goodness'."MMG, Brisbane
A producer and audio engineer in Helsingborg put a pair of our 414s against a pair of AKG C414s, side by side, and published the results. His verdict, not ours:
"I really have to praise you for a very nice microphone that at times sounded better than the original AKG C414. Incredibly impressive microphone that is of the absolute highest quality!"Producer/Audio Engineer, Helsingborg, Sweden

"I recorded an acoustic guitar with both the NUDE 414 and an AKG 414 XL II through an API 1608 console using the API preamps... Overall I like the NUDE 414 better. There were 3-4 other engineers in the control room and they were pretty blown away."Audio Engineer, Fever Pitch Recording, Chicago USA
In the box: the NUDE 414, an aluminium flight case with foam cutouts, and the proprietary rectangular 414 suspension mount. With the classic brands, the case and shockmount are often where the accessories catalogue starts. Here they are just in the box. Shipping is paid (about $25 within Australia, about $50 to the US), and every parcel goes out insured, tracked, and signature on delivery.
The NUDE 414Class A discrete, transformer-coupled
Plugs into any interface with 48v phantom power. No preamp shopping spiral required either.
Minimal drum mic-up. A Sydney producer records a kit with the 414 and a stereo ribbon. This is where >140dB max SPL stops being a spec and starts being useful.
Sons De Carrilhoes, classical guitar, recorded with the 414 and a FET47 in a Melbourne engineer's kitchen. A good mic doesn't wait for a perfect room.
Omni through figure-8, plus a 10dB/20dB pad and a 75Hz/150Hz high-pass on the front sliders. One mic, reconfigured per source.
Cardioid or wide. "Silky top end... taming the acoustic string noise without killing any of the sparkle."
Engineer/Producer, BeeGee Studio, Newcastle NSWCardioid. "It is the sound I have been searching for... it just hits the vintage 70s sound for me."
Home studio, SydneyCardioid, pad in. Over 140dB max SPL means the amp will give up before the capsule does.
Omni or wide cardioid, singles or a matched pair.
Cardioid, high-pass at 75Hz. That golden-era top end without the golden-era invoice.
Figure-8 and omni earn their keep here.

Inspired by classic designs, described honestly, engineered for value. We're not pretending it's a vintage original, and we're not charging like it is.
"This clone found itself on a song today, and oh my... it really brought everything together... this 414 recreation (with brass ring!) is an elegant workhorse. Today it was the centre piece of the drumkit."
Recording & Mixing Engineer / Music Producer, works from Studios 301, Sony Music Studios and BMG Studios"I bought the Austrian Audio OC 818 mainly for acoustic, and the NUDE 414 is so much less expensive, and I favour the 414 greatly."
Home studio, Sydney, Australia"I have several NUDE mics... they are seriously good and I am about to order a 414."
Mix Engineer, AMG Studios, Sydney"They're lovely microphones with some really nice high mid-range response. Love them for overheads."
Producer, Melbourne"The NUDE 414 had a more pleasing low end but the highs were just a tiny bit darker. I applied maybe 1 - 1.5 db high shelf and it really excelled."
Audio Engineer, Fever Pitch Recording, Chicago USA"Highly recommended. Great sound."
