The Recess Ergo Lounge
The desk chair you still want to sit in at 7pm. $395.
You probably own two chairs that each half work: a desk chair that makes the room feel like an office, and a soft one that hurts by the second hour. We built one seat to do both jobs, and the seven reasons below include the four-star reviews and the one thing we have not fixed yet.
1REASON
One chair, so you stop buying two
It is 6pm. You are not done, but you want out of the chair, and the soft one across the room is a slow disaster for your lower back. So most people end up owning both and liking neither.
The Ergo Lounge is one seat that holds your posture through the working day and reclines when the day is over. That is the whole idea, and it is why people who buy it stop shopping.
- The office chair keeps you upright but never lets you switch off in it.
- The comfortable armchair is lovely for ten minutes and sore by the second hour.
- So you own both, neither is right, and one of them is ugly.
- By evening you are on the couch with a laptop, which is the worst of the three.

Three settings, and the chair stops arguing
Seat height across a 42 to 50cm range. Backrest tilt, which you can lock or leave free to recline. Tilt tension, which sets how hard the back pushes as you lean into it. Locked and firm for a morning of focus, released for everything after.
You set them once, and after that the chair does what you told it to. That is the part a soft armchair never does and an office chair makes you fight for.
"I really love this chair, it exceeded my rather high expectations. Super comfy, great back and arm support, and I really love the colour (Earth). I use it daily in my home office. I am ~180cm tall, the height is good, and the ability to occasionally recline is a nice little bonus."

If you want a lumbar support you can dial in, buy the other one
The Ergo Lounge does not include built-in lumbar support. It is built for laid-back comfort rather than upright task seating, and that is a deliberate difference, not an omission we are talking around. If you want structured lower-back support you can set for height and depth, buy our Ergo Pro 2.0 desk chair instead.

It looks like furniture, not office equipment
Most ergonomic chairs are built to disappear into a cubicle, so a cubicle is what they make your living room look like. Soft earthy tones, rounded lines, no visible hardware down the side. Our reviewers keep leading with the colour rather than the ergonomics, which tells you what they noticed first.
"I've been researching chairs for a long time, trying to find something for my home that doesn't give it an office feel, and this chair is perfect."

It sits lower than a desk chair, on purpose
That is what makes it feel like a lounge rather than a workstation, and it is the one measurement worth checking before you order. At 60cm wide it tucks into a study nook or sits beside a sofa without dominating the room.
Underneath: GREENGUARD compliant foam, a hard-wearing polyester, a five-star nylon base and silent PU castors that roll on floorboards and carpet without marking either.
"We found this chair perfect for our needs. The fabric is good quality and it was easy to put together. It is comfortable and provides enough support for my husband who is quite tall and over 100kg. Note that it is lower than your average desk chair, which is what we were after, but it would be worth checking the measurements before purchasing."

"What a beautiful, comfortable chair. It fits in my home office perfectly and ensures that i have great posture whilst working at my desk. It is firm through the seat and back support and the arms aren't too high that they prevent the chair from being tucked under even at full height."

Your dog will get there before you do
We did not design for this and we cannot take credit for it, but it comes up in our reviews often enough to mention. People buy the chair, and then something with four legs claims it.
It is a small thing, and it tells you something real: this is a chair people relax in, in the rooms they actually live in, rather than one they get up from at 5pm.
"Looks great and surprisingly comfortable. Both myself and the dog can fit."

"I love my new chair. The colour. The style. The comfort level. Easy rolling, even on carpet. Thankfully my cat has released its grip on my chair and I've made good use of it as I work from home. Great purchase."

"excellent chair. One star off for wrapping it in an unrecyclable foam/soft plastic blend"
Dorothy-Jane D. · 4 stars · Earth · ✓ Verified buyer, recess.com.au
Dorothy-Jane is right, and we have not fixed it yet
The chair itself is made from 95% recyclable materials and ships in a recycled cardboard carton. The internal wrap is a foam and soft plastic blend, and it is the last piece we have to solve. She took a star off for it and we would rather print that than quietly leave it out.

Four steps, no tools, and a month to decide
It goes together in four steps without tools, in about 10 to 15 minutes, out of one 19kg recycled carton. Then you have 30 days to live with it in your own light, next to your own sofa, which is the only test that counts.
The money bit, spelled out
Our limited lifetime warranty covers physical damage from poor workmanship affecting the structure: the back frame, armrests, base and castors. The gas lift and the adjustment mechanisms are covered for two years, as are the fabric and foam. We provide and install the replacement parts.
A refund excludes the shipping you paid and a further 10% restocking fee, and the chair needs to go back in its original inner and outer packaging. Take store credit instead and you get the full amount back including shipping. The 30-day policy covers your first purchase of a product and does not apply to clearance stock. None of this limits your rights under Australian Consumer Law.
Once your chair ships it is 2 to 3 business days to metro Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, 3 to 5 to Adelaide, 5 to 7 to regional areas and 7 to 10 to other states and territories. Peak periods can add a little time, and current dispatch timing is shown on the product page.

The verdict, from us
One chair, at $395, instead of the two you own
Work in it, then stay in it. If it turns out to be the wrong height for your desk or the wrong green for your room, you have thirty days and we have told you exactly what that costs.
Quick questions, answered
Is it an office chair or a lounge chair?
Both, and that is the whole idea. It has the seat height, tilt and tension adjustments of an office chair with a reclining, laid-back feel closer to a lounge. It is built for people who want one chair to work in, relax in and everything in between.
What exactly can I adjust?
Three things: the seat height across a 42 to 50cm range, the backrest tilt, which you can lock or leave free to recline, and the tilt tension, which sets how much the backrest pushes back as you lean. The armrests are a fixed part of the frame.
Does it have lumbar support?
No. The Ergo Lounge does not include built-in lumbar support; it is designed for laid-back comfort rather than upright task seating. If you want structured lower-back support you can set for height and depth, our Ergo Pro 2.0 desk chair is the one to look at.
When will it arrive?
Once your chair ships: 2 to 3 business days to metro Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, 3 to 5 to Adelaide, 5 to 7 to regional areas and 7 to 10 to other states and territories. Dispatch time varies by colour, so the current date is shown on the product page before you order.
Is it hard to put together?
Four steps, 10 to 15 minutes, no tools. It arrives in one 19kg recycled cardboard carton.
What does the warranty cover?
It is a limited lifetime warranty on the structure: the back frame, armrests, base and castors, against physical damage from poor workmanship. The gas lift and the adjustment mechanisms are covered for two years, as are the fabric and foam. Separately, you have 30 days from delivery to change your mind; a refund excludes the shipping you paid and a 10% restocking fee, while store credit returns the full amount including shipping.
